5 Vital Health Screening Tests for Men

Preventive care is one of the most effective ways to take care of one’s health. Here are 5 important tests men should get, under the guidance of their healthcare practitioners.

Screening tests are vital for individuals to proactively take charge of their health and understand if there are any health issues—even if one isn’t displaying atypical symptoms, etc. Regular health checkups help identify potential health problems early, allowing for prompt and effective treatment. This not only improves overall health and well-being but also lowers the risk of serious health problems, including heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer. Here are some of the key health tests that men should consider getting on a regular basis.

Blood Pressure Test
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and other health problems. Blood pressure tests are quick and simple procedures that can be done in a doctor’s office, and even at home. The test measures the amount of force that blood exerts against the walls of the arteries as it is pumped through the body. A reading of 120/80 mmHg or lower is considered normal, while a reading of 140/90 mmHg or higher is considered high blood pressure. If you are at risk for heart disease (by having a family history of it, diabetes, poor lifestyle habits, etc.), you should check your blood pressure more often—consult your healthcare provider to determine the regularity.

Cholesterol Test
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in all cells of the body. High levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol can build up in the walls of the arteries, leading to plaque formation and an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. A cholesterol test measures the levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Men over the age of 35 should have their cholesterol levels checked regularly. Those with a high risk for heart disease should start getting it checked earlier, and continue monitoring their levels.

Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test
This test is not recommended for those at a lower risk of developing prostate cancer. But, after the age of 50, you should discuss with your doctor if you should get tested. They will determine the need based on your family history, health, and other risk factors and symptoms.

Colorectal Cancer Screening
Regular screening for colorectal cancer can help detect the disease early, when it is most treatable. Screening options for colorectal cancer include a stool test, a flexible sigmoidoscopy, a colonoscopy, or a CT colonography—it’s best to discuss with your healthcare provider which is the best option for you. Men should begin screening for colorectal cancer at the age of 50, or earlier if they have a family history of the disease.

Skin Cancer Screening
A skin cancer screening involves a thorough examination of the skin by a doctor or dermatologist to look for any unusual moles or growths. Men should have a skin cancer screening at least once a year, or more often if they have a family history of the disease or have had previous skin cancer. It can also help to be aware of your skin, and be alert to any out-of-the-ordinary marks/spots or change in texture/colour.

This is, of course, not an exhaustive list of the health check-ups one should get. It will vary depending on unique health requirements and risk factors. However, other important tests include regular physical examinations, eye and dental exams and diabetes screening.
