Improving Digestion in the Elderly

Here are some ways to combat digestive problems in the elderly.

Digestive problems are common among the elderly and can greatly impact their overall quality of life. As we age, our digestive system becomes less efficient, leading to a range of issues, including constipation, acid reflux, and abdominal pain.

However, there are several simple steps that senior citizens can take to improve their digestion and maintain good gut health.

Stay hydrated: Staying hydrated is vital for good digestion. Drinking enough water helps keep bowel movements soft and prevents constipation; aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day.

Exercise regularly: Regular physical activity can help stimulate the digestive system and prevent constipation. Exercise can also help one maintain a healthy weight, which is important for good gut health. Walking is a great exercise for the elderly—if they have any physical difficulties, consult a physiotherapist to determine the best routine for them.

Eat a balanced diet: A balanced diet that includes plenty of fibre, fruits, and vegetables can help prevent constipation and promote good gut health. Fibre helps regulate bowel movements and adds bulk to stools, making them easier to pass. However, try not to include too much fibre immediately as this can lead to stomach discomfort.

Limit processed foods: Processed foods, such as white bread and sugary snacks, are often low in fibre and can contribute to digestive problems. Everyone, no matter their age, should limit their intake of these foods and focus on eating a well-balanced diet.

Avoid foods that trigger digestive problems: Certain foods, such as fatty foods, spicy foods, and caffeine, can trigger digestive problems in some people. Seniors should pay attention to their bodies and avoid foods that trigger symptoms, such as heartburn or abdominal pain. Along with this, many elderly people face problems while chewing; if that is the case, opt for softer foods but make sure that they are not missing any food group that can lead to deficiencies. Speak to a nutritionist to figure out the best diet plan that doesn’t compromise on taste or health.

Consider probiotics: Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help improve digestive health. They can be found naturally in fermented foods, such as yoghurt and kefir, or taken as supplements. Consult a doctor before starting any new course of medication.

Manage stress: Stress can have a negative impact on the digestive system. It’s important to make time for relaxation and activities to manage stress; this will vary from person to person, but try and help your loved one figure out what helps them.

Avoid excessive use of laxatives: Laxatives can be helpful for relieving constipation, but they should always be used under the guidance of a doctor.

Get enough sleep: Getting enough sleep is important for good overall health, including digestive health. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to help regulate the digestive system.

See a doctor if symptoms persist: If your loved one continues to experience persistent digestive problems, they should see a doctor. Chronic digestive problems can be a sign of an underlying condition that requires medical attention, or a side effect of another medicine they are taking.
